Travel New Zealand - North and South Island

by: Tour-Australia | Print View

Situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is mainly comprised of two main large islands - the North and South Islands, and one smaller island - Stewart Island, as well as numerous smaller islands including the Chatham Islands.

New Zealand is a country dominated by towering peaks, long sandy beaches, exotic natural bush, sparkling lakes, and an extraordinary array of flora and fauna because of its isolation from the rest of the world. These values make New Zealand a haven for outdoor activities as well as a great place to unwind and take it all in.

The New Zealander is also known as a "Kiwi" (named after the national bird). Kiwi's have a unique and dynamic culture with influences from it's mostly European, Maori, Asian, and Pacific inhabitants. Kiwi's are known for their friendliness, honesty and openness.

Many first time visitors assume they can see all of New Zealand in a week or two but that often proves a challenge! You can zip about the islands by plane but most vacation travelers will enjoy a more leisurely itinerary that includes some self drive, train or coach travel to take in the spectacular scenery.

Queenstown is surrounded by dramatic mountains and sits on the shores of beautiful Lake Wakatipu.  The town itself is charming with lots of shops and open air restaurants, a Kiwi Museum, bicycle and walking paths around the lake and a gondola ride to the top of the mountain.  There you can visit the museum, snap some gorgeous pictures or be a bit more adventurous and literally jump off the edge of the mountain top in a tandem paraglider!

Another must go near Queenstown is Milford Sound with its dramatic fjords and waterfalls.  A day excursion by bus or plane is easily arranged or you can consider a night on the lake or in Te Anau for a more leisurely experience.

New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. New Zealand has four quite distinct seasons: Spring (Sept-Nov), Summer (Dec-Feb), Autumn/Fall (Mar-May) and Winter (June-Aug). In summer there’s plenty of sunshine, and activities in and around the water include rafting, snorkeling, diving and kayaking. You’ll find snow on the mountains in winter and excellent skiing. Away from the mountains, New Zealand winters are mild and temperatures generally do not fall below freezing.
