Fiji is an archipelago situated in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean that has approximately 322 islands. More than half of the archipelago's populace is found in the islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, most of which are a mixed race of Polynesian, Indo-Fijians, Rotuman and Melanesian, so Fiji is rich in history and culture and offers some of the world's best places to see and experience.
Unlike Hawaii and other popular destinations, Fiji offers a completely unspoiled island paradise, just like what you see in vacation brochures. On the isolated islands of Fiji, you won't run into crowded beaches or large supermarkets. This unique destination is known for recreation activities including hiking in the tropical forests and scuba diving or snorkeling in the blue waters. Croquet and golf are available if you prefer a more organized sport.
Fiji Islands are an exotic place where tourists can spend a memorable beach vacation. Most people are not quite sure about where lies Fiji, still everybody is dreaming about a holiday spent in a so renowned land. Many tourists consider that holiday deals to Fiji belong to the most expensive in the world and up to a point this fact is true.
No matter which island of Fiji you choose to visit, be sure to soak in plenty of the local island culture. Over the centuries, a unique Fijian culture developed from Samoan, Tongan, Melanesian, Indian, Chinese, and European traditions. Today, the indigenous Fijian culture is still very alive, and overall the culture of the Fijian islands is still very traditional. In fact, many lodgings where you may be staying still have a thatched roof, like a tiki hut. The heavy Polynesian influence includes the worship of tikis and related traditions. As a result, you'll see many tiki masks, statues, and other carvings during your stay in Fiji.
Fiji - Weather
The wet season begins early in December and lasts until April. During this time it is hot and humid with almost daily late afternoon downpours on the larger islands. The small offshore islands generally miss these downpours altogether. The downside is the high humidity and mosquitoes, although on most of the small island resorts this is rarely a problem due to the refreshing sea breeze. Once the rains ease off around the end of April, most regions experience a more moderate climate. Temperatures become pleasantly cool at night.
The best time for visiting the Fiji Islands is between May and November. This is the 'winter' season, and though still deliciously warm and tropical, it is not as humid as the hotter, wetter summer months of December - April. However, do not rule out the summer months as there are many advantages. Firstly there is a greater abundance of flowering shrubs and trees as many of these start to bloom more prodigiously from November. Secondly, since it is the ' low season ' it is easier to find many excellent deals. Fiji is beautiful all year round - it's just that there is more chance for some tropical rains during summer. But it is the tropical rains that make Fiji such a beautiful paradise!
Exchange Money ?
Travelers checks attract an exchange rate slightly higher than cash in Fiji which more than compensates for the one percent commission you pay when you buy the checks. There's a bank right opposite the baggage claim before Customs at Nadi International Airport. However they deduct a commission and you'll save that and get a slightly better rate of exchange on travelers checks if you wait until you're through Customs. There are several private moneychangers in the airport concourse including Western Union which give a slightly better rate than the bank without commission. In all the main towns of Fiji, look for Money Exchange offices on the main streets. Not only do you avoid bank commissions but you don't have to wait with local customers in long lines. The Indian Money Changers also offer good Rates.
