Langkawi is made up of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea off the northwest coast of Malaysia, with the main island, Pulau Langkawi, being only one of two that are inhabited. This tropical paradise has clear turquoise waters that encourage scuba diving, sailing, yachting, and other water sports, gorgeous white sand beaches, secluded coves, forests, mountains, paddy fields, and spectacular marine life. The rain forest has lush flora and fauna and interesting wildlife.
The magical beauty creates a perfect getaway on the most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia. Many of the hotels are waterfront or close to the beach, and quite a few are within just kilometers of the airport. Although there are luxurious accommodations, you will also find a great many budget to mid-range hotels. The restaurants serve delicious seafood such as giant tiger prawns, local favorite selections, and western fare.
Langkawi beaches are a number one drawing feature for visitors to Langkawi as it is most likely to be the main reason for a trip to the island. The next best feature is its tax-free status, where booze, cigarettes and confectionery can be purchased at a much cheaper price than on the island. Langkawi's most popular duty-free complex is Zon, next to the Underwater World which is on Cenang. Otherwise there are malls around Kuah that can satisfy your shopping curiosity.
For shopping there are not much choices. You can go to Langkawi Fair which is the biggest shopping mall now. You can find a good supermarket here and lots of shops where you can buy nice souvenirs, furniture etc. Most of the good quality and brand shops are here. There is also Langkawi Parade at the west entrance of the town. It's the poorer version of Langkawi Fair. But it has a large supermarket at the bottom floor where you can find lots of goods. Other than these malls you can go to Trimula to buy mobile phones, some electronics and house accessories like curtains, window blinds.
Food in Langkawi is really good. There are lots of choices. You can find almost any type of cousine here; Thai, Japanese, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Italian and even Russian. Because of its touristic state, island has very good high quality restaurants. But for long term, you need to learn where to buy goods to cook by yourself. Other than buying from markets, there is a wet market in Padang Matsirat which is close to Langkawi International Airport. Here you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fish, crabs and lobster.
The nightlife on Langkawi is one not to be missed, as a lively vibe awakens the folks down the strip of seafood restaurants, bars, beach-bars, and the beach itself! Take a walk down the beach to witness a chilled out bonfire session, which you can simply join. Or take a peek at the souvenir shops to purchase Langkawi holiday memorabilia. The ambience of the night is definitely one to absorb to end a beautiful day of fun in the sun.
